Gurminder
is an artist whose paintings approach Indian subjects, especially
mythological figures and women,
through techniques influenced by Indian
folk art and European painting. She works mainly in
gouache and
watercolour.
Born
in the Punjab, Gurminder moved to Britain with her family at the
age of ten. She graduated in Fine Art from
Birmingham Polytechnic
and since then has had several solo and group
exhibitions.
She was a participant in many of the pioneering Black and Asian
art exhibitions of the late 1980s and 1990s, and has
also featured in many
women's art shows, including the 1992 "Myth, Dream and Fable", in which
Paula Rego was one of the four other exhibitors. Gurminder's paintings
have been bought by several institutions, including the
Arts Council, Cartwright Hall in Bradford, Nottingham
Castle, Walsall Art Gallery, Wolverhampton Museum and Art Gallery,
and by many individuals. Her paintings have featured
on book
covers for Heinemann and Oxford University Press. She has held many residencies,
including at the University of Nottingham, and given workshops at
schools and other educational and public bodies. If you would
